How to buy tickets
Where can I buy a ticket?
At major bus terminals, major travel agencies (JTB, Kinki Nippon Tourist,
Nippon Travel Agency, Tokyu Travel etc) and convenience
stores as well as JR (Japan Railways) stations. Look for Midori-no
Madoguchi or Green windows (see the photo) for some JR operated routes.
Note that credit cards are not normally accepted, except for at travel agencies
and Midori-no Madoguchi.
You cannot pay by traveler's checks.
The sign of Midori-no
Madoguchi or Green windows.
Important note:
You may have to pay a commission between ¥300 to ¥500 (5%
consumption tax will be added) when buying tickets through travel agencies.
Please ask these agencies beforehand.
If you don’t buy a ticket /without reservations
Same day travel is an option if seats are available. Wait listing
for same day cancellations and unclaimed seats is also possible.
Availability of round-trip and booklet tickets
A round trip ticket is available within 6 to 10 days from your departure.
For use within a month on some routes. In addition, book of 4 tickets on
several routes expire within 3 to 6 months.
Reservations and cancellations
A telephone reservation service is available, however there are only a few English speaking staff. Internet reservations are only available in Japanese.
A reservation number still requires the purchase of bus tickets 3 to 5 days prior to travel. Some companies, for example the Keihin Kyuko Bus company in Tokyo, the Shinki Bus in Hyogo Prefecture etc require that tickets be purchased within 4 days of travel.
Failure to purchase within these time periods will result in automatic cancellation of a reservation. Cancellations should be made at purchasing bus terminals or travel agents. ¥100 fee will be charged upon cancellation.
